Episode 89: Projectile tree-planting with Flash Forest
In the latest episode of Everybody in the Pool, drone reforestation with an action-movie twist.
New episode alert! This week on "Everybody in the Pool," it’s the first of two episodes highlighting awesome climate tech startups that happened to spring to life with the help of Kickstarter campaigns.
(In case you missed it, last week’s episode was with Nathan Nalevanko from Kickstarter, about how the platform is building in more support for climate tech startups amid an increase in interest and new ideas.)
This week, I’m talking with Cameron Jones, co-founder of Flash Forest, a climate tech startup that uses drones to fire seed projectiles into the ground, making tree planting faster and more efficient. Jones founded the company with his brother after the two experienced wildfire devastation in their home country of Canada.
In the episode, Cameron shares insights into the challenges and triumphs of using crowdfunding to launch an innovative climate solution. Discover how planting a billion trees helps combat climate change and address reforestation needs. And find out why climate change-fueled wildfires burn so hot that forests need this kind of intervention to replant, as opposed to waiting for nature.
Plus, despite his best efforts not to geek out (seriously, who would even try that on this show), we get into the various ways Flash Forest has had to redesign its drones and its seed packets for maximum velocity and ability to penetrate the earth, to give the most seeds the best chance at turning into trees.
And, stay tuned for next week’s conversation with Jonathan Cedar of BioLite, another inspiring Kickstarter success.
