Join me on Notes!
A new place to connect, because network effects are hard, but this is pretty cool.
I mentioned Substack Notes in the Friday newsletter, and if you haven’t already, I highly recommend it. Not just because I’m there, but because it’s the tip of the spear for some really cool content from some really great writers.
Yes, it looks and works a lot like Twitter. But what I like about it is that it’s part of a larger content ecosystem where, if you like someone’s Notes, you can subscribe and find much more of them, including long-form writing and podcasts and private chats.
Even though there’s been a lot of conversation about this as a Twitter clone or even replacement, what if — and stay with me here — what if Notes were a place where lots of kinds of thinking and writing and analysis could co-exist in a way that gives people a real opportunity to get smarter and more informed and exposed to intellectual exploration instead of just hot takes!? Wild, I know.
Anyway, even though I started out using it sort of like Twitter, I’m evolving my thinking about how I plan to use it, and I’m excited to give it time and see what it evolves into. For now, I like it, and the sense of depth behind it makes it seem a lot less random than, say, Bluesky, which I tried earlier this week and which led to this exchange about how random it appears.
(Yes, wack is back.) Anyway. … try Notes!

I love the way you were breaking down how much energy it takes to use a cell phone you’re the best
